Description

This Crispy Honey Garlic Tofu is the perfect combination of crunchy tofu, sweet honey, savory soy sauce, fresh garlic, and ginger. Coated in a sticky glaze and finished with sesame seeds and green onions, it’s an easy plant-based dinner that tastes better than takeout.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 block (14-16 oz) extra-firm tofu, pressed
  • ½ cup cornstarch
  • ¼ cup soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • ¼ cup honey
  • 45 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated
  • ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • ½ cup cooking oil, for frying
  • Sesame seeds, for garnish
  • Green onions, sliced, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Press the tofu for 30-60 minutes to remove excess moisture.
  2. Cut the tofu into ¾ to 1-inch cubes.
  3. Toss the tofu with cornstarch until evenly coated.
  4. In a bowl, whisk together soy sauce, rice vinegar, honey, garlic, ginger, sesame oil, and red pepper flakes.
  5. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  6. Fry the tofu until golden and crispy on all sides, about 10-14 minutes total.
  7. Transfer tofu to a paper towel-lined plate.
  8. Remove excess oil from the skillet and add the honey garlic sauce. Simmer for 1-2 minutes until slightly thickened.
  9. Add the crispy tofu and toss until evenly coated with the sauce.
  10. Garnish with sesame seeds and green onions and serve immediately.

Notes

Pressing the tofu is essential for maximum crispiness.

Double the sauce if serving with rice or vegetables.

For a vegan version, substitute maple syrup or agave for honey.

Avoid overcrowding the pan while frying.

Best enjoyed fresh, as the tofu softens during storage.
