Ingredients
Scale
- 1 block (14-16 oz) extra-firm tofu, pressed
- ½ cup cornstarch
- ¼ cup soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
- ¼ cup honey
- 4–5 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated
- ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil
- ½ cup cooking oil, for frying
- Sesame seeds, for garnish
- Green onions, sliced, for garnish
Instructions
- Press the tofu for 30-60 minutes to remove excess moisture.
- Cut the tofu into ¾ to 1-inch cubes.
- Toss the tofu with cornstarch until evenly coated.
- In a bowl, whisk together soy sauce, rice vinegar, honey, garlic, ginger, sesame oil, and red pepper flakes.
- Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
- Fry the tofu until golden and crispy on all sides, about 10-14 minutes total.
- Transfer tofu to a paper towel-lined plate.
- Remove excess oil from the skillet and add the honey garlic sauce. Simmer for 1-2 minutes until slightly thickened.
- Add the crispy tofu and toss until evenly coated with the sauce.
- Garnish with sesame seeds and green onions and serve immediately.
Notes
Pressing the tofu is essential for maximum crispiness.
Double the sauce if serving with rice or vegetables.
For a vegan version, substitute maple syrup or agave for honey.
Avoid overcrowding the pan while frying.
Best enjoyed fresh, as the tofu softens during storage.
