- ½ cup all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1 tablespoon smoked paprika
- 1 egg
- ¾ cup milk
- 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1 teaspoon table salt
- Breadcrumbs, for coating
- Canola oil, for frying
Instructions
- Rinse the onion and slice into approximately ¼-inch rings.
- Separate the onion rings and set aside.
- In a medium bowl, combine flour, baking powder, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper.
- Coat each onion ring in the flour mixture and set aside.
- Add the egg and milk to the remaining flour mixture and whisk until smooth.
- Dip each onion ring into the batter, allowing excess to drip off.
- Coat each ring evenly with breadcrumbs.
- Heat oil to 350°F–375°F and fry onion rings in batches for 3–5 minutes or until golden brown.
- Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate and serve immediately.
Notes
Panko breadcrumbs can be substituted for extra crunch.
For additional flavor, add garlic powder, onion powder, or cayenne pepper to the flour mixture.
Pat the onion rings dry before coating to help the batter stick better.
Serve immediately for the crispiest texture.
